Combine history and elegance with impressive architecture and a fantastic location at this elegant 3-storey luxury B&B right in the city-centre.
Gothic House B&B sits close to the beautiful and towering Cathedral in the centre of Norwich, and one look at the building instantly makes you think of medieval times: the rubble-built wall and the ancient-looking timbers in the cellar invoke a real sense of history! During the medieval era Norwich was one of the largest cities in England and, in fact, known as England’s ‘second city’.
The building is in one of the oldest parts of the city, and therefore the origins of the site are bound to be even older. Ancient buildings c.1740 pre-date Gothic House as it stands today, with the original buildings on this site demolished and replaced and altered in the 1700’s or early 1800’s to add another storey. We don’t actually know what the original building was – it could have been a house, or outbuildings to the nearby King’s Head pub… whatever it was, we at least know it was a two-storey structure that didn’t stick around for long!
Today Gothic House is a transformed and stylish structure, in keeping with the current fashion at that time of town houses with windows facing the street in the ‘Gothic’ style, with the addition internally of some rather fashionable Regency decorations ranging from Greek and Egyptian elements and classical forms.
Gothic House has a curious duality that you need to see to believe; a mix of extravagance in its fanciful decorative elements alongside the plainer and more sober aspects of architecture.
The B&B retains much of its original character, and has a great range of facilities to ensure your stay is still firmly rooted in the modern world (if you’d like it to be)! Enjoy two individually decorated rooms, delicious locally-sourced ingredients for breakfast and a fantastic location on Magdalen Street, only 5 minutes’ walk of the beautiful Norwich Cathedral. Magdalen Street is a hive of activity offering vintage bargains and curious antiques mixed with continental grocery stores, small quirky cafes and interesting pubs. Located on the edge of the Cathedral Quarter, you are never far from stylish boutiques, independent eateries, restaurants in Tombland and historic buildings such as The Great Hospital, plus the winding river Wensum and its riverside walks.
