There are many stories inspired by the work of England’s well-loved Bard - particularly as this year is the 400th anniversary of his death - but one of our favourites has to be West Side Story.
Inspired by Romeo & Juliet, the play modernises this classic love story (bringing it forward in time to the 1950’s) as it explores the rivalry between the Sharks and the Jets, two New York Street gangs – and from 23 – 27 August you can see it in all its glory at the Norwich Playhouse!
We’re well aware that casting for a production like this can be no easy feat because it requires a cast of triple-threat performers that can not only act but sing and dance, too – not much to ask for, then! On top of this, the production’s complexity and sophistication means various experts needed to be sourced by theatre company Mixed Voice for a variety of roles; Director Holly Graham trained at the London School of Musical Theatre and is now a professional singer and singing teacher whilst Matt Brown, as Musical Director, is based in Manchester but is returning to Norwich especially for this production - keep an ear out for classic songs including Maria, Somewhere, Tonight & I Feel Pretty. Routines have been choreographed by Rhiannon Hopkins, a professional choreographer, dancer and musician based in London - we’re looking forward to lots of dazzling, extended dance scenes to blow us away!
It will be an amazing show, with a cast of over 30 highly-skilled performers, plus fashion-lovers can look forward to appreciating the wonderful costumes which were designed by Martin Frost, the show’s costume designer – he’s worked with many celebrities in the past including Jennifer Hudson, Sasha Baron Cohen and Thandie Newton. To give you an idea of the dazzling standard of his work, he’s also worked for the likes of Disney and Cirque du Soleil!
The incredible bespoke set is being made locally and the production will feature a live band – it’s set to be a truly spectacular show that you won’t want to miss; this is your 3 week warning!
