This has to be one of the most innovative, exciting ways to spend an arty break in Norwich – but you’ll need to be quick!
Norwich is the place to be for arts and culture right now, with recent exhibitions setting the city abuzz including last year’s Jeff Koons show at Norwich Castle, the current Alberto Giacometti: A Line Through Time and Henri Cartier-Bresson: Paris exhibitions at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and, of course, the current British Art Show 8 (BAS8), a once-every-five-years show that is, very excitingly, in Norwich this year! Our excitement for the show’s arrival reached fever pitch, with the first day last Friday kicking off 10 weeks of hugely prestigious art exhibitions and installations around the city (find out more in our BAS8 blog post). In addition to all this excitement (as if that’s not enough?), how would you fancy combining all this culture with the chance to stay the night in an exclusive and fully functioning room that’s been designed by artists, each on a different theme or concept?
Norwich’s artist-run gallery OUTPOST is presenting their annual members’ show to coincide with BAS8, curated by Professor Lynda Morris of Norwich University of the Arts and Chris Rawcliffe, a London based curator, giving visitors the opportunity to view over 30 artist members’ work. Outpost are also organising an off-site group show titled ‘general studies’, taking place at OUTPOST studios and curated by two aficionados of the art world: BAS8 artist Ryan Gander and contemporary art critic and editor Jonathan P Watts. Catch the Members’ Show from 22 June – 31 July at OUTPOST’s gallery (10b Wensum Street, Norwich, NR3 1HR) whilst the rooms included in general studies can be viewed during the day, 12-6pm, from 23 June – 24 July at Gildengate House (NR3 1AX).
After attending the various shows and events, why not retire to one of only 8 quirkily decorated artistic rooms (part of the general studies exhibition - but don't worry, that's only during the day!) each by a different artist: Simeon Barclay, Melissa Burn, Doug Bowen, Alice Chandler, Isaac Clarke, Harry Meadley, Liv Preston and Alfie Strong. These rooms are available to book on either 2 July or 16 July only for just £18 per night – an absolute steal in anyone’s book! It’s an offer which is bound to go very quickly, so don’t delay if you fancy a piece of the action!
The various rooms available (all must be booked through Airbnb) are listed below:
One thing’s for sure: there’s no better way to immerse yourselves in art this summer, and Norwich is certainly the city to do it in!
