Alongside the appearance of twinkling streetlights and vats of mulled wine on bars everywhere, the arrival of Festive Markets is a symbol that Christmas is well and truly on the way.
A glittering centrepiece in Norwich’s Christmas calendar will be a fabulous Festive Fair, held at The Forum from 24th to Monday 27th of November (and entry is FREE!). It’ll be a spectacular event, not only featuring a vast range of indoor and outdoor stalls selling local arts, crafts, plants and produce, but also live music from star performers, and catering for all your winter warming needs.
This event is timed just right if you’re feeling stuck for inspiration, or are the kind of person that likes to get all of their Christmas shopping over and done in one go. There will be more than 60 indeed stalls selling everything from contemporary jewellery, ceramics, elegant glassware and wonderful woodwork, right the way through to a selection of rad prints, paintings, cards, tins, textiles, plants and much more besides! Plus, there’ll be some fabulous, locally-produced winter produce if you want to put some gift hampers together this year. You’ll find home made sweets, mince pies, cheese and preserves, which would make a fabulous gift for somebody, or you could just keep them for your own table. No matter the person you’re buying for, there will be something for them here, and not only that, but you’ll be able to soak up some of that lovely Yuletide atmosphere in one of Norwich’s most impressive buildings (which by then will have its Christmas lights up!).
You’ll find a variety of caterers outside at the Fair, in order to keep you fuelled (and toasty). Not only that, but there will be a whole host of live music performances over the four days of the fair. Norfolk-based brass band The Pavillion Quintet will be playing Christmas Carols every day which - if you’re not feeling completely in the swing of Christmas - will definitely get you in the festive mood. On Friday and Sunday, talented local singer Olivia Watson will be entertaining us, and to close the Fair on Monday, the wonderful Perry Cooke from The Voice Kids will be performing outside the Forum in a series of afternoon sets.
Perry was mentored by will.i.am, while he was on the famous ITV talent contest. He's just released his debut album, 'Unplugged', which is a two disc CD and DVD set, and available to buy from cdbaby.com for $5, with all monies raised going to the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital Skin Cancer Appeal and the Teenage Cancer Trust. As Perry's a Norwich native, we asked him a couple of questions about his home city...
What's your favourite thing about Norwich?
I love how friendly Norwich is. It’s not too big or too busy but has everything here that you would want to do or see.
If you were showing will.i.am round the city, where would you take him?
I would take him to Norwich Cathedral and the castle because they show a bit of history in Norwich.
Is there anywhere in Norwich that you'd really like to perform?
I would like to perform in the Theatre Royal and the football stadium.
Where will you be heading for your Christmas shopping this year?
I will be heading to Chapelfield to do my Christmas shopping this year.
Finally, your new album features a cover of Ed Sheeran's 'Shape of you' - if you were a shape what shape would you be?
Circle because I like to think I'm quite a well-rounded person.
And the best bit about all of this is the event will also be raising money for Breast Cancer charity ‘Keeping Abreast’, with its own stall and festive wrapping station where visitors can have their purchases gift-wrapped for Christmas in return for a small donation. Definitely useful if you were even considering wrapping your presents in tin-foil this year…
This is going to be so much yuletide fun, and personally I can’t wait to listen to Christmas Carols from the office. The Fair is very much “the more the merrier”, so we look forward to seeing you there for a whole day of traditional, spend-a-whole-day kind of of Christmas shopping. We’ll be seeing you there!
