For a city with such a diverse shopping offer – boasting high street favourites, independent boutiques and everything in between – you’d be forgiven for thinking that one area of shopping Norwich lacks in is vintage… well, you’d be very wrong!

There are various areas in Norwich which offer up vintage vibes so well; head to the Norwich Lanes and the Magdalen Street area for a diverse range of retro fashion, accessories and homeware shops. Most finds in these areas – particularly Magdalen Street - usually coming in at much lower prices than in other UK cities, so for thrifty vintage hunters this is the place to head to!

NORWICH DOES VINTAGE

There’s a very exciting event coming to Norwich on Saturday 8 October: Norwich Does Vintage (11am – 4.30pm). This looks set to be an amazing affair oozing with era-specific treasures including fashion, homewares, jewellery, accessories and art plus specialist workshops! Housed at OPEN on Bank Plain (right in the city centre), there’ll be oodles of space to pack in the vintage bargains. It’s just £2 entry, and you can then shop to your heart’s content whilst listening to the wonderful sounds of singer Jackie Raven – and afterwards, when you’re in need of some refreshments, head to their vintage tearoom to round off the day!

Of course, before (or after) you’ve visited the fair you should definitely check out all the other exciting vintage gems Norwich has to offer – why not make a day of it? To that end, we round up our favourite Norwich spots for vintage shopping – whether you want to bargain hunt or splurge on something really special!

WHERE TO SHOP

MADGALEN STREET

Mosey along to Magdalen Street and you’ll be faced with a plethora of vintage shops. To continue the fashion theme check out Retreat Vintage – small but perfectly filled with amazing clothes from many eras! For retro homewares head to Looses Emporium and Aladdin’s Cave; there’s so much to see so make sure you set aside plenty of time to wander around! Looses Emporium also hosts a great flea market every Saturday which is well worth visiting if you can, and further along Madgalen Street sits Junk & Gems, a unique little shop filled with plenty of delightful pieces.

NORWICH LANES

If you’re enjoying a day in the Norwich Lanes, make sure you head over to Lulu’s Vintage Clothing on St Benedicts Street – it’s a relatively new addition to the city and full of beautiful clothing from different eras; the shop itself just oozes style! For eclectic items which are sold for a great cause pop into Sue Ryder Vintage and Retro shop, situated in the Norwich Lanes’ historic Bridewell Alley. Here you’ll find two floors stuffed full of vintage clothing, shoes, accessories, homewares and other nostalgic finds. There are plenty of places in the area to pick up retro homewares and other items, too – St Gregory’s Antiques & Collectables is housed in an old church and has some really interesting pieces (they have a sister shop in Westlegate, too!), as does The Goat Lane Fair (weekly, on Thursday, 8am – 3pm) at the Quaker Meeting House.

NORWICH MARKET

A place many overlook but which is fantastic for vintage shopping is Norwich Market. One of the largest and oldest outdoor markets in the country, you’ll find a wide range of products for sale including stalls selling some reasonably priced, exciting pieces. Check out Speckled Hen Vintage (stall 137), Taxi Vintage Company (stalls 97, 98 & 99), Nicky’s Vintage Clothing & Accessories (stalls 117 and 118) and Lovering and Co (77 & 78).

SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT…

Don’t miss the Maddermarket Theatre’s Vintage and Retro Rail Sale, where they sell off various pieces from their extensive and dazzling wardrobe! It’s an event that’s not to be missed, and the next one is on Friday 25 November, so get the date in your diary – you might find a few Christmas outfits there, too!
