If there’s an event that screams CHRISTMAS for every age, it’s the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. Travelled to from far and wide, this event really manages to convey a sense of sparkle and fun for many visitors - and it’s the biggest Christmas show in the country (possibly even in Europe), so we’re really lucky to have it right here in Norfolk!
Plan the perfect New Year’s break, whether you fancy partying in style or enjoying a sit-down dinner – or both! Here are our top ways to bring in 2017 right here in Norfolk:
Partridge fans will no doubt be excited to learn (if you haven’t already) of Alan’s newly released autobiography/ travelogue Nomad; a follow up to his 2011 hit I, Partridge, this book picks up where the other left off so we don’t have to miss out on any of Partridge’s escapades!
To me, there’s nothing quite as satisfying than sampling a variety of delicious Thai dishes, freshly cooked with plenty of flavour. New restaurant Giggling Squid ticks all the boxes: it packs a real punch with its beautiful décor and amazing food, serving up an array of more unique dishes alongside the old favourites (I love to try new things but will never tire of a Masaman Curry).
In heart of the vibrant Norwich Lanes sits Sonkai – a gorgeous, independent jewellery shop that also offers repairs, refitting and bespoke custom designs. Having opened in Norwich in 2006, they are celebrating their 10th year with an exciting project: designing the Lord Mayor and Sheriff of Norwich’s new civic chains.
From glass eyes to lighter-than-air sweet treats, here’s a few of our favourite finds in Norwich's Castle/ Arcade district which have stood the test of time!
Norwich’s Arcade/ Castle District has not only been nominated but shortlisted for Great British High Street of the Year again (Norwich also won back in 2014 with the Norwich Lanes), so local Norwich resident Jumara Mulcahy tells us why she thinks beautiful Norwich should definitely win!
You may already be aware of ‘hygge’; the concept is becoming more and more prevalent here in the UK, having picked up the pace recently. It originates from Denmark (in fact there’s no straight translation for this word into English) and, if you’re not familiar with the term, it’s basically about embracing life – all year round, but particularly during the colder months when moods can dip as much as the temperature.
Get your diaries ready – here’s the long-awaited part two of our top festive events highlights, and because there’s so much going on, we’ll just cover the first half of December in this post. So prepare yourselves, because Christmas in Norwich is a well and truly jam-packed season!
Each Friday afternoon (around 4.15pm) we'll be live on Future Radio, highlighting some of the best events and things to do over the next week or so!
It’s that time of year again when we all start working through our long lists of Christmas presents – but we’re not talking about what you want, we’re talking about what you will be buying for friends and family. But actually, going back to our own lists - ahead of anything else - many of us aspire and desire the perfect ‘Christmas outfit’. This is the season, after all, when we feel we are owed a couple (or three) new things to wear!
With an exciting and varied cultural programme of events and exhibitions throughout the year, Norwich is a treasure-chest of unique venues and galleries to really immerse yourselves in all things cultural!
If you want to visit a city with shopping for every taste and budget, then Norwich is the place for you – and something we really excel at is our distinctly quirky shopping offer. With plenty of independent retailers and second-hand stores, alongside the usual high street favourites, it’s a great city to seek out unique and lovely products you won’t find elsewhere – a real shopper’s heaven!
Norwich is positively crammed with amazing boutiques, shops and independent retailers, so it can be easy to overlook the city's bustling market when you’re on a shopping mission – even though it's one of the largest and oldest open-air markets in the country!
Today we're incredibly excited to have actor Sam Clemmett here for a Q&A all about Norwich! He's currently playing Albus Severus Potter, Harry's son, in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, but he's a born and bred 'Norfolkian', having grown up in Brundall, a small village in the heart of the Broads!
Curling up with a great book is one of life’s great pleasures. Sometimes browsing shelves of brand new (or at least new-to-you) books, and deciding what to read next, is a big part of the fun – and luckily Norwich is blessed with plenty of fantastic bookshops to indulge your book addiction (as well as an amazing festival for crime-lovers, Noirwich, in September)! We should hope so too - we are a UNESCO City of Literature, after all!
Each Friday we'll be live on Future Radio, highlighting some of the best events and things to do over the next week or so!
Last night I was lucky enough to experience, for the first time, PrimEVIL – dubbed as 'Norfolk’s scariest attraction'!
It’s time to get carving those pumpkins and bulk buying sweets… Halloween is almost here! We might not go as crazy as the Americans over it but we still like to partake in plenty of spooky fun, and Norwich has plenty to offer!
Today we welcome Fiona from Nor-Folk to the blog, who'll answer some questions about the city and her life here!
Autumn has well and truly arrived, Halloween is just around the corner and we’re starting to plan our All Hallows’ Eve antics. We’ve got something a little different to do this Halloween… if you dare, that is!
Sometimes, after a day of serious sightseeing and shopping, it's great to know you're only a hop, skip and a jump away from 'home' – be it only a temporary home.
Because there's just so much to do in Norwich this Christmas - far too much to pack into one or even several blog posts - we'd highly recommend you take a look at our dedicated Christmas section on the VisitNorwich website, for events, places to eat, explore, stay and shop at this festive season!
The fifth in our series of films about Norwich has arrived: The Trendsetter!
For a city with such a diverse shopping offer – boasting high street favourites, independent boutiques and everything in between – you’d be forgiven for thinking that one area of shopping Norwich lacks in is vintage… well, you’d be very wrong!
In 1976 punk music exploded into the UK music scene, and - as a city who has always been keen to ‘do different’ (which is also the motto of the city’s University of East Anglia) - Norwich certainly embraced it!
